Things to look for on Thursdays draft:
- Trades: whether they involve picks, or superstars, trades should be plentiful on Thursday night. Look for some teams to move up to the late lottery for a player they love, look for the Blazers to package their three first round picks into an earlier pick or a star veteran, an look for Paul George or Jimmy Butler to be moved before or during the beginning of the NBA draft.
- Guards will go early: assuming the first two picks are point guards, we could see up to five more guards go in the lottery. This is a guard heavy draft, and some of them will be major values. Guys like Dennis Smith and Malik Monk might fall to the late lottery, in prior drafts (even last year), they both might’ve been top five picks.
- Plenty of centers: there are a lot of centers that will be drafted on Thursday. None of them will be drafted early on, and we should expect a center run with the post lottery picks. In a league that continues to diminish the center position, some teams may find great value in some young big men late in the first round.
- The Harry Giles predicament: I have him at 14th to Miami, some mocks have him going later and very few have him going earlier. The issue with Giles, is the injury history, he’s had two knee surgeries, and was limited in his lone year at Duke. If he regains his explosive athletic ability, he’ll be the steal of the draft regardless of where he ends up. If he can’t regain his athleticism, then you have to look at it as a swing and a miss on a late lottery, mid round pick. Regardless, picking Giles anywhere after 12th overall is worth the risk.
